What we are

A proper service centre, not a quick fit shop.

Southern Downs Mechanical is a general automotive repair shop at 1 Freestone Road, Warwick. Locally owned and operated, servicing Warwick and the surrounding areas. We do log book servicing on every make and model, we hold a Queensland Approved Inspection Station licence for safety certificates, and we take on the repairs that other places would rather send down the road.

A fair bit of our week is highway work. The Cunningham Highway runs right past us, so people break down on the Gap between Brisbane and Warwick and end up on our driveway on a tilt tray, usually on a Friday afternoon. We would rather find them a part locally and get them home than leave them stuck for the weekend.

Inspection station no.

What we do

Servicing, safety certificates and the repairs in between.

Everything below is done in the workshop at Freestone Road. If you are not sure which one you need, ring us and describe the noise.

Log book servicing

On all makes and models, stamped and recorded so your new car warranty stays intact. It is the job the workshop was built around.

Safety certificates

We are a Queensland Approved Inspection Station, licence AIS 12107, so your roadworthy is done here rather than sending you somewhere else.

General mechanical repairs

Everything from a rattle you cannot place to a job that has beaten someone else. Diagnosed properly first, then quoted.

Brakes

Pads, discs and the full brake system checked, machined and replaced with parts we would put on our own vehicles.

Air conditioning and heating

Servicing, regassing and repairs, which matters more than most things through a Southern Downs summer.

Batteries

We stock and fit ACDelco batteries. Tested on the spot, swapped over while you wait if that is what it needs.

Suspension and steering

Ball joints, tie rod ends, shocks and bushes. The country roads around Warwick find these faults for you.

Cooling, turbo and intercooler

Split hoses, overheating and boost leaks. We source the part locally wherever we can so you are not waiting days.

UHF radios and antennas

GME UHF radios and aerials supplied and fitted, wired in properly rather than cable tied under the dash.

Driving lights and accessories

Spotlights, mud flaps and auto accessories fitted, including a genuine switch in the dash instead of a stick on toggle.

Breakdown work

We work with the local tow operators, so a vehicle that comes in on a tilt tray gets looked at rather than parked.

Diagnostics

Fault codes read and then actually chased down. Knowing the code is not the same as knowing what broke.

Approved Inspection Station

Safety certificates done here, on licence number 12107.

In Queensland you need a safety certificate to sell or re register most vehicles, and only an Approved Inspection Station can issue one. We hold that licence, so the inspection and any work it turns up happen in the same visit, at the same workshop, with the same people.

On the licence

AIS 12107

  • Safety certificates for cars, utes and light vehicles
  • Any repairs the inspection finds, quoted before we start
  • Log book servicing stamped in the same visit
The Southern Downs Mechanical workshop at 1 Freestone Road, Warwick, with the SDM Service Centre sign and the roadside entry sign

1 Freestone Road

Easy to find, easy to get into.

We are on the corner of Freestone Road with the entry sign out the front and plenty of hardstand, so you are not reversing a caravan out onto a main road. One customer put it best when they described the place as immaculate premises, and we would like to keep it that way.

Yesterday I was driving from QLD back to Tamworth, we pulled over at a rest stop near Warwick around 10am, and going over a small bump caused my ball joint to snap. I called a bunch of mechanics but because it was a Friday, most closed early. I called Southern Downs Mechanical, and they agreed to have a look at it. Deb was incredibly helpful to us, she even dropped us at the local shopping centre whilst we waiting for the repairs to be completed. Then Jack came and picked us up. Chris handed over the keys. I was expecting a big bill considering how last minute and accommodating they were, but the end total was less than expected. The staff were exceptional. They turned an extremely stressful day, into a miracle!

Souther Downs mechanical are so good to deal with. Immaculate premises and top quality vehicle servicing with a smile. Very thorough and knowledgeable. We Had some spotties installed in our new Jimny. Chris pointed that they went out of their way to install a genuine spot switch in the dash plus i forgot i had them install mud flaps. Our Ranger and Jimny will always be serviced by Cjris and the team at Southern Downs. Highly recommended to all

Can't thank the team at Southern Downs Mechanical enough! My diesel decided its turbo induction hose hated life and dropped a 15 cm split halfway up Cunningham's Gap on our way from Brisbane to the Celtic Festival with the kids. They took us in late on a Friday afternoon, quickly identified the problem, sourced the replacement part, and had us safely back on the road in no time. The whole team was kind, friendly, knowledgeable, and incredibly gentle with my mechanical ignorance. Absolutely top-notch service.

On the driveway

A normal week at Freestone Road.

A snapped ball joint off the highway, a split turbo hose from the Gap, and a Forester that came in on a tilt tray and went home the same afternoon.

A snapped front suspension arm hanging beneath a car on a tow truck deck near Cunningham's Gap
